An Overview of Lake Lewisville

As a whole, Lake Lewisville offers an amazing opportunity for fishing in the Lewisville area. Lake Lewisville is in Denton County, on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. The big North Texas reservoir boasts an impressive array of fish species, with some predominant types including:

  • Blue catfish
  • Channel catfish
  • Hybrid striped bass
  • Largemouth bass
  • Spotted bass
  • White bass
  • White crappie

The largemouth bass is by far the most popular Texas fish. The white crappie and white bass provide the most activity in the lake. If you’re going for another open water sport fish, the lake stocks hybrid striped bass for even more fishing fun. Whatever you’re fishing for, you’ll find plenty of reasons to visit Lake Lewisville.

Head to available timber structures or fish along the shoreline if you want to reel in largemouth bass. The old Lake Dallas area boasts the best catfishing, while crappie fishing is great under bridges crossing the lake’s arms. You can find hybrids around the ridges and humps in the main lake as well as Hickory Creek. White bass fishing is best in the summer since these basses school in the main lake then — just follow the gulls to find them.

Lake Lewisville Fishing Barge

If you’re searching for a specific Lake Lewisville spot to visit, you can’t go wrong with the Lake Lewisville Fishing Barge. A fixture of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex since 1957, the Barge is popular with local anglers thanks to the variety of fish you can reel in. Species you can catch at the Barge include:

  • Black bass
  • Blue catfish
  • Brim
  • Channel catfish
  • Crappie
  • Hybrid bass
  • Sand bass

Bring up to three polls and minnows on site for a day of local fishing. The murky waters offer a great experience for expert anglers, especially if you fish “the crack,” a horizontal opening between the main building and another attached barge. A drop sinker rig with minnows lures in crappie here. You’ll want to visit before and after spawn. Typically, you can try a morning and afternoon run. Cables and structures below make fishing tough, but you’ll get rewarded with impressive crappie.

When the wind is right at the beginning of summer, a balloon rig far out in the lake can help you fish for blue catfish and hybrid stripers. You can also pay an extra charge to fish some trap doors in the Barge. When you’re not fishing, the Barge offers air conditioning, a kitchen, and drink and snack machines.

Lake Park

Lake Park is home to the Lake Lewisville Fishing Barge, but you’ll discover a range of other fishing opportunities beyond the barge itself at the park. You’ll find Lake Park at 600 Sandy Beach Road, just east of I-35. The city of Lewisville operates the park on land leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Spanning more than 662 acres, this park along the Lake Lewisville shoreline translates to endless chances for outdoor fun. The park is divided into four major areas, including a marina as well as athletic facilities, day-use areas, and a golf course.

An abundance of shoreline means tons of good fishing at Lake Park. Species you can reel in at different spots include black bass,  channel catfish,  hybrid bass, and sand bass.  The shoreline at Lake Park is particularly suited to fishing for black bass and sand bass. Explore the rocky shoreline or sandy beach to fish from the shore.

The Cut at Lake Lewisville

There’s no official address for a popular spot known to locals as “The Cut.” It’s in Lake Wood Village, at a dead-end parking site of Garza Ln. (the first road before or after the Lewisville toll bridge, depending on the direction you’re coming from). The Cut is the Lake Dallas Dam’s original breach, dividing Lake Lewisville’s upper and lower parts. Water flows from Lake Dallas into Lake Lewisville here, and the current makes the area attractive to a variety of fish, including:

  • Black bass
  • Blue catfish
  • Brim
  • Channel catfish
  • Crappie
  • Hybrid bass
  • Sand bass

You’ll find parking at this location. It’s also easy for bank fishers to access.

Stewart Creek Park

Stewart Creek Park, located at 3700 Sparks Road in The Colony, is another area park with great access to Lake Lewisville fishing. The 65-acre recreational park along the lake’s shores boasts amenities like a swim beach area and a three-lane boat ramp. Planning a fishing trip to this park is a breeze since there is plenty of available parking, a complimentary life jacket rental program, and an opportunity to check out tackle and fishing rods for free.

At Stewart Creek Park, you may catch species such as black bass, channel catfish, hybrid bass, and sand bass. During the sand bass and hybrid bass run, you can find a point within the park that is great for bank fishing. You can also walk along the shoreline to cast for black bass. Though the park can be hit or miss for fishing, you’ll reap the rewards when the conditions are right.

Andrew Brown Park East

Head over to nearby Coppell for some more great fishing close to home. Andrew Brown Park East is located at 260 E. Parkway Boulevard. The park offers a picnic area and a playground, among other amenities. And of course, the park offers a pond and stream for local anglers. Some species found in this area include common carp, largemouth bass, and sunfish.

That concludes Huffines Chevrolet Lewisville’s list of some of the best fishing spots in and close to Lewisville. Did we miss your go-to fishing spot close to home? If we did, let us know! We’d love to add even more great Lewisville fishing opportunities to this list.
