What Makes the New Chevy Silverado ZR2 Package So Great?

In the Spring of 2022, we at Huffines Chevrolet Lewisville are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Chevrolet has significantly updated the Silverado, adding a new front fascia and grille, a fully redesigned interior, and impressive, cutting-edge technology. But the most exciting development is the introduction of the all-new Silverado ZR2 high-performance, off-road-specialized truck.

The ZR2 prototype has competed in the Best in the Desert race series through some of the toughest and most grueling terrains. While the rugged, race-proven Silverado ZR2 offers superb off-road capability, it's equally at home on the highway with its comfortable ride quality, providing you with everyday usability. Here, we'll look at the features that make the ZR2 a great choice for off-road enthusiasts.

Rugged Exterior Design

The 2022 ZR2 includes rugged styling and features that set it apart from other Silverado models, and there’s no mistaking its purpose. With its lifted suspension and big all-terrain tires, it has greater ground clearance than other off-road trims and offers better approach and departure angles. It comes standard with a spacious Crew Cab and a standard-length bed.

Distinctive features include a raised front steel bumper, bright red tow hooks, 18-inch wheels with 33-inch tires, model-specific skid plates, and a sculpted hood with black inserts. The ZR2’s unique grille has integrated lighting and the Chevy flow-tie emblem that helps direct air to cool the engine and lower oil temperatures. When you approach, start, and walk away from the ZR2, the updated wing-shaped daytime running lamps now display engaging animated lighting sequences.

There’s been no change to the strength, durability, and versatility of the standard pickup bed with its 89.1 cubic feet of cargo volume. The ZR2 is offered with a power-up and down tailgate. Also available is the six-position Multi-Flex tailgate, which has six positions for versatile loading and easy access to the cargo bed. The 12 standard cargo tie-downs help ensure that your load stays in place.

Power and Capability

The Chevy Silverado ZR2 gives you the optimum capability, whether you’re racing through the desert, crawling over the rock-strewn Texas trails, or cruising on the freeway. Under the aggressively styled hood is a growling 6.2-liter V-8 engine that generates 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission with an Electronic Transmission Range Selector. The enhanced two-speed transfer case features Terrain Mode, which enables one-pedal rock crawling.

Front and rear electronically locking differentials provide the best traction when the going gets tough. The ZR2 is the first Silverado to use Multimatic 40 mm DSSV spool-valve dampers. These, along with the uniquely tuned springs, provide greater wheel articulation and increased front and rear suspension travel than the Silverado Trail Boss. The standard 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler mud-terrain tires and specially designed high-approach front bumper allow a 31.8-degree approach angle.

Protecting the underside of the ZR2 is a unique skid plate package. At the same time, the dual exhaust outlets are safely tucked away behind the rear bumper for an enhanced departure angle and to avoid potential damage from rocky terrain. If you come into contact with rocks or anything else that mother nature throws in your path, the bumpers feature removable end caps to enable easier replacement.

When you want to haul gear, whether it’s for day-to-day use or on your off-road adventures, the ZR2 has a payload of up to 1,400 pounds and a maximum conventional towing capacity of 8,900 pounds. So, when you hit the back-country trails, you can take along all the gear you need.

Stylish and Contemporary Cabin

In the ZR2’s spacious and refined, driver-focused cabin, you’ll find yourself surrounded by premium materials and fine craftsmanship. The interior features a unique Jet Black and Graystone leather-trimmed cabin set off by dark trim details. Horizontal lines and floating elements add to the spacious feeling and modern looks of the interior. Between the front bucket seats, the center console features a new electronic shift controller.

Advanced Technology

At the center of the ZR2’s tech is the stunning 13.4-inch horizontal infotainment touch screen. It combines with the customizable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to provide you with a striking panoramic view of essential vehicle information and infotainment settings.

The cluster offers a choice of four custom layouts to suit your driving needs and personal preference. The most straightforward layout is ideal for standard highway driving, while in heavy traffic or on technical trails, other arrangements provide you with more detailed information. When you engage Terrain Mode to tackle ice, snow, or off-road trails, the cluster displays engaging graphics to represent your selected terrain.

With the integrated Google Assistant with voice technology, you can say “Hey Google” or press the push-to-talk button to alter the climate control, change your music, make calls, send text messages, set reminders, and more. You also get voice-activated Google Maps for easy navigation. Complete connectivity is provided by wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability as well as Amazon Alexa.

Safety Features

The Silverado ZR2 comes standard with the Chevy Safety Assist suite of active driver assistance technologies. They include lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, the following distance indicator, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, and automatic high beams. You also get a standard HD rearview camera and the Buckle to Drive function, which delays starting the vehicle until the driver’s seatbelt is fastened.

Chevrolet hasn’t specified which additional safety features the ZR2 will offer, but available technologies include adaptive cruise control, a safety alert seat, a rear camera mirror, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change alert with side blind-zone alert.
