Top 5 Features of the Chevrolet Trax

The evolution of the sport-utility vehicle has brought us to an interesting time, where less, it seems, is more. That’s one way of looking at the development of compact crossover SUVs such as the sporty Chevrolet Trax, Chevrolet’s entry-level SUV.

The Trax packs a remarkable number of features into a sleek, sporty package: a peppy engine with plenty of horsepower and torque, a surprising amount of roominess for both passengers and cargo, solid fuel-efficiency ratings, and an infotainment technology package to enhance the driving experience.

Proving once again that good things come in small packages, here are five features in the Trax that make it stand out from some of its competitors:

1. Engine Specifications

The Chevy Trax runs on a turbocharged 1.4-liter DOHC gas engine with four cylinders that’s been vastly improved for the 2022 model year. Trax’s new engine now produces 155 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and 177 pound-feet of torque at between 2,000 and 4,000 RPM. The horsepower number represents a 12 percent increase over the prior model year, while the torque is up almost 20 percent.

By comparison, two of the trims in the Hyundai Kona, a comparable crossover, use an inline four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 132 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 RPM.

2. Fuel Efficiency

The Chevrolet Trax is sold in two trim configurations — the LS and the LT. Each of the trims offers an all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive version. Both produce attractive results for gas mileage. EPA fuel efficiency estimates for the front-wheel drive are 24 mpg in city traffic and 32 mpg on the highway, with a combined rating of 27 mpg. The all-wheel drive version is slightly less fuel-efficient at 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.

By comparison, the front-wheel-drive Buick Encore, also a compact SUV, rates at 25 mpg city/30 mpg highway for a combined rating of 27 mpg, while the all-wheel drive version comes in at 24 mpg city/29 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.

The Trax also tops competitor models in the small SUV category in fuel efficiency, such as the Honda Pilot, the Acura MDX, the Cadillac XTS, and the GMC Terrain, according to the EPA.

3. Storage Space

Cargo room remains one of the top concerns for many SUV drivers, whether you’re a soccer mom or dad with a busy big family, or a frequent vacationer, adventurer, or handyman. Looked at from the outside in, you might wonder if the Chevrolet Trax has what you need.

Actually, it does. Across all trim configurations, the Trax offers a surprisingly large total cargo volume of 48.4 cubic feet, with second-seat space at 18.7 cubic feet, giving you adequate space for equipment, gear, and luggage. That competes with the Buick Encore, which has seat one volume of 48.4 cubic feet and seat two volume of 18.8 cubic feet; and the Jeep Renegade, which offers about 50 feet of cargo space through to the front seat, and 18.5 cubic feet to seat 2.

4. Infotainment and Technology Features

We know that drivers today expect the latest technology in their new cars, and the Chevrolet Trax does not disappoint. The car comes with a 7-inch diagonal touchscreen that runs the Chevy Infotainment 3 system, which allows for seamless integration of technology into your daily routine.

The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay for iPhones and Android Auto for Android phones, providing the links you need to listen to podcasts or your favorite playlists, check-in at home, find the best route to your destination, or order takeout on the go. As a bonus feature, the system offers Bluetooth audio streaming for two active devices at once. Your Chevrolet Trax also includes a 3.5-inch driver information display to provide access to instruments and other alerts about vehicle status, just when you need it. These are just some of their entertainment and technology features.

One neat feature is the MyChevrolet app, which lets you utilize your mobile phone to adjust controls in the vehicle. Through the app, you can turn your phone into a remote key FOB, help locate your vehicle, check the health of the car, and more. The app includes integrations with other types of technology to bring even greater value. For instance, you can use the app to give voice commands to lock and unlock the doors with Google Assistant. Meanwhile, go into the Chevy Marketplace section of the app to access services from other brands that you typically need while in your car, such as ordering takeout or drive-thru food or filling up your gas tank. It’s all about the ease of use.

5. Safety Features

In addition to compatibility with the Chevrolet OnStar service, the Chevrolet Trax is outfitted with many safety features that will give you peace of mind as you drive. Start with 10 airbags, which are standard across the various trim configurations. But also factor in other technologies such as rear-view cameras, the LATCH system for easy and safe installation of child car seats, rear-seat child security door locks, and other features.

Depending on the trim configuration you pursue, you may also be able to upgrade to add options such as rear cross-traffic alert, side blind zone alert, and rear park assist. These options are specifically available in the Chevrolet Trax LT in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.
